The Cruise Room Bar

the cruise room denver co

Born the day after the repeal in 1933, The Cruise Room is Denver’s longest-running bar, and has remained open since its founding. Drawing inspiration from the RMS Queen Mary, the space’s décor showcases a wide array of unique vintage design features, including a distinctly retro Art Deco design and wine bottle-shaped layout. Inside, guests will discover the perfect spot to while the night away while sipping on one of our delicious cocktails, or sampling our enticing menu of small plates. We’d never dare insinuate that it’s the best in town, but thankfully we don’t have to — as many others have done so on our behalf. After getting cozy in one of the sleek booths or settling in at a seat at the bar, a refreshing beverage will soon be calling your name.

Boombox Brew Bar

Sleek and inviting, this icon of Denver nightlife is a hidden gem; one that embodies the chic glamour (not to mention the undercover debauchery) of the Prohibition era. After nearly 90 years of serving booze, we can confirm that The Cruise Room has its mixology perfected, and you can expect some of Denver’s finest drink selections. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of paranormal activity within the hotel’s premises. At one end of the bar, an enticing jukebox awaits, though regrettably, it was out of service during my visit.

Between its fascinating history, chic décor, delectable cocktails and delicious small plates, we’ll give you a glimpse into this Denver gem that will entice you to make this your next go-to spot. A hidden gem preserved in the chic glamour of the Prohibition-era, The Cruise Room is an iconic local landmark and among the best bars in Denver. Sleek and inviting, The Cruise Room showcases a wide array of unique design features, including a distinct Art Deco design and wine bottle-shaped layout. Sofar Sounds is known as a music events company, but once you hear their whole story, you’ll realize it’s not just a business — it’s a movement.

History and Design

With each room offering a unique design, our Superior Classic rooms include Art Deco or Victorian details paired with modern amenities. Our guest rooms and suites combine historic charm and contemporary service in an ideal downtown location. Spacious and bright, our accommodations feature convenient amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and HD TVs as well as thoughtful touches like rich drapery, antique headboards, and more. Perhaps the most well-known is that of the Cruise Room’s most regular customer, a peculiar postman reported by multiple workers who guzzles down his beer at the bar while the bottle remains full. Legend has it, in the 1930s the poor soul set out to deliver Christmas gifts to the children of Central City but succumbed to the harsh weather conditions before completing his mission. If you’re in the mood for a bite, be sure to check out their delicious menu featuring small plates and sweets, which change seasonally.

With its art deco aesthetic, moody red lighting, and a jukebox of jazz music, patrons can step into the past while enjoying posh cocktails in their intimate black booths or at the adjacent bar. So, for Anthony Magliano, founder and executive creative director of Quixotic, it made sense to bring Sensatia to Denver. Pinball may not have a reputation as a cutting-edge sport, but it’s back on the rise in Denver – with world champions to prove it. This classic game is drawing players from all over the world to the arcades of the Mile High City.

Gazing upon the walls, your attention might be drawn to the intricately carved panels adorned with succinct expressions. These panels pay homage to various ports of call for the Queen Mary, each encapsulating the essence of toasting traditions and cocktail culture from its respective location. Take note of the special shape of the bar which actually resembles a wine bottle. Beyond its reputation as one of the region’s oldest bars, the Cruise Room draws visitors in with its distinctive art deco design, a masterpiece crafted by Charles Jaka. The Cruise Room is an iconic bar and lounge located in the Oxford Hotel in Lower Downtown (LoDo) Denver, Colorado. It is the longest operating bar in Denver, opening its doors on a very special day of December 5, 1933.

According to Rubald, some of the bar’s original details that you can still spot include its marble floor, vintage jukebox and hand-carved panels on the walls, which depict different ways to say “cheers” worldwide. Something else that is special about the history of the bar is that it’s located in the historic Oxford Hotel, which holds the distinction of being the oldest operating hotel in Denver. As for food, it’s limited to small plates, such as oysters, olives, and cheese and charcuterie samplers.

The tales of ghost stories are plentiful, and if you’re anything like us, we love a good ghost story thrill to go with our cocktails. “Over the decades, many guests have reported seeing a gentleman in a postman uniform visit The Cruise Room,” Rubald said. According to Rubald, he comes in, sits at the bar and orders a beer while muttering words about delivering gifts.

Believed to be the apparition of a postman from the 1930s who lost his way while on a mission to deliver Christmas gifts, he is often seen sitting at the bar, ordering a beer, and then disappearing. When the bartender goes to check on him, they find the beer bottle is still full. Each of the panels are original except for those of Italy and Germany which were reportedly taken down during World War II by soldiers staying at the hotel. Before its grand public debut, it had a clandestine life as a speakeasy, offering a secret haven for patrons to savor illicit libations during the Prohibition era. From the legendary Buckhorn Exchange, hailed as the city’s oldest dining establishment, to the venerable Four Mile House, a sentinel of history standing proud as Denver’s oldest enduring structure. As you step through the doors of this time capsule, the glowing red walls and vintage accents swallow you in an art deco ambiance similar to its original decor from the 1930s. “The Cruise Room was designed in a similar fashion to the bar on the RMS Queen Mary, with a wine bottle-shaped layout,” said Charlotte Rubald, bar lead at The Cruise Room. Our recently updated Deluxe Classic rooms showcase a Victorian style and feature an additional 100 square feet of space of living space, bright natural light, and stunning downtown views. What looks like the door to this Oxford Hotel original is actually an entrance to a time capsule.
